The IOP’s National Officer for Wales David Cunnah recently attended the Big Bang Wales event at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, hosted by the Engineering Education Scheme Wales and Careers Wales.

The fair attracted hundreds of students from the local region who saw displays from many local businesses and educational bodies, and a show entitled “Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions” from Mark Lewney. Local schools also exhibited an impressive array of engineering projects.

At the IOP stand we were challenging students to set the fastest time for firing a carrot from a vacuum powered cannon. Dylan Evans from Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl recorded the fastest carrot, firing a shot at 94 feet per second (that’s 29 metres per second or 64 miles per hour), as measured by our light gate setup.

Thanks go to Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl staff and students for their help in manning the stand, as well as Kenneth Jones who kindly gave up his time to fire round after round from the carrot cannon!
